Wendy Edwards – Candidate for St Johns Ward, Kenilworth
I am delighted to be chosen as a Green Party candidate for St Johns Division. In Kenilworth Green Party candidates won eight seats on the Town Council and three seats on the District Council in 2019, and I want to be a part of the Green team working for strong community action in our area. Our achievements over the last two years include helping establish the Covid 19 support group (now a charity) and leading the council in opposition to the A46 strategic link road. With more Green Councillors and the support of local people we can bring about the changes we need to make Kenilworth an even better place to live, environmentally sensitive with sustainable employment and low energy housing.
I have lived in Kenilworth for more than 30 years and worked in Coventry as a science teacher in Further Education for nearly as long. I now do some work for an apprentice assessment organisation and am a keen allotment holder. My children went to local schools and enjoyed neighbourhood facilities. I love that I am able to walk 15 minutes from home in one direction and be in the countryside or walk 15 minutes in another and be in the town.
Kenilworth Green councillors have lots more they would like to do. We want to work collaboratively with our fellow councillors from all parties. As an ex-teacher, I am very concerned about education and engagement of young people. We need to make sure that the new school is built to high environmental standards and provides education fit for a rapidly changing world. We are now seeing the destruction HS2 is causing locally and need to be active in ensuring that they mitigate the damage caused. A transport plan is already in place, but there are challenges managing the increased needs brought about by the new housing developments. Flood management, high quality, warmer and lower energy housing and biodiversity are other issues we are tackling.
