Our candidate Zoe Leventhal KC has decided to withdraw from the General Election campaign in Kenilworth & Southam, for family reasons, and she will remain a Town Councillor.

Zoe said:

I'd like to thank all the amazing volunteers and supporters who have been part of the campaign so far. I have really enjoyed getting to know communities and groups across the villages and towns in the constituency, and building really positive connections.

It has been such a difficult decision to have to step down, but it is the right one for me and my family at this time.

I am looking forward to continuing my work on Kenilworth Town Council, supporting residents in Abbey Ward, and focussing on several important local projects. I wish my Green Party colleagues every success in the continuation of the party's General Election campaign”

Cllr James Kennedy from the Kenilworth Green Party, said:

“I'm very sorry Zoe has had to step down as General Election candidate. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for everything she has achieved over the past six months since her campaign started.

She's encouraged so many people across the constituency to consider voting Green for the first time and created a strong momentum for positive change which will continue with our new candidate.

The Green Party messages of a fairer greener future, stronger communities and doing politics better have never been more needed and so well received in Kenilworth and Southam.”

Warwick District Green Party will shortly make an announcement about a new candidate for the Kenilworth & Southam constituency for the forthcoming General Election.

The Kenilworth Centre

At the January Town Council meeting, councillors unanimously approved a proposal to support the Kenilworth Centre with core funding of £75,000 over three years. This will significantly support theKenilworthCentre to maintain and enhance its services for young people and other community groups.

Mandy Brougham, Chair of the Trustees of the Kenilworth Centre, said: “We are delighted to receive this core funding from the Town Council. Since 2015 we have operated without any core funds, relying on lettings income and charity donations to operate a significant building in the centre of town and support for local young people. As a result of COVID and inflation the charity’s reserves have been eroded. This funding will enable the Centre to maintain its services, particularly to young people, and will give us a sustainable platform from which we can further fund-raise and develop new services for the community and explore sources of income.”

Cllr James Kennedy, leader of Kenilworth Town Council said: “The Council is committed to enhancing opportunities for young people in the town and the Kenilworth Centre, through its Youth Club and mentoring programme at Kenilworth School provides a life-changing experience. With the lack of core funding from central government and with an increasing number of new residents moving into the town looking for community activities, I am pleased that the Town Council can provide support for one of the key facilities in our community. The Council will be monitoring closely both how the Centre continues to develop new services and the Centre's progress in its fundraising.”

In addition to supporting the Kenilworth Centre, the Town Council has an ambitious programme of improvements for some new projects, including the next phase of Wayfinding, verge wildflower planting, and a Business and Visitor Economy Forum. Some of this funding will come from reserves, but it will also be necessary to increase the precept (the money the Council receives from council tax) by £1.95 a year for a band D council tax payer.

Cllr Richard Dickson, Chair of the Council’s Finance and General Services Committee, said: "For less than the price of one extra cup of coffee each year for a typical household in Kenilworth, the Council will be able to support the Kenilworth Centre and continue to deliver and improve high quality services across the town. Our precept remains less than half of the national average amount and is one of the lowest in Warwickshire.”

We are very pleased to announce that Zoe Leventhal KC, a leading barrister and Kenilworth Town Councillor, is our MP candidate for Kenilworth & Southam.

We’re going for it! The Greens now lead Warwick District Council and Kenilworth Town Council, and we’re building on our local presence because we believe that Zoe, a Green candidate, is the right candidate for this electorate. Now it’s time to take on the Tories and make history with Zoe as our first Green MP for Kenilworth & Southam.

About Zoe

Zoe lives in Kenilworth with her family and is already a Green champion for the community, as well as having all the skills and integrity we need in a new MP.

As a local councillor on Kenilworth Town Council, Zoe is well-known for initiating new councillors’ surgeries in the area, creating a cycling scheme for young people, securing public scrutiny of decisions on key issues such as leisure and school transport, and initiating an accessibility project for disabled access.

In her professional life, she is a King’s Counsel - a barrister in the field of public law - and practises in areas such as health & social care, discrimination, climate change and planning. Her work is about ensuring that the Government is fair, transparent and honest about what it is doing, that it respects the rights of individuals and works for the public good. But we’ve seen erosion of the rule of law, mockery of the truth and empty talk about the climate crisis; and it’s time to fix the politics that enables this.

In her own words

Zoe says:

Over the past year, I’ve knocked on hundreds of doors across the constituency and got to know lots of people in the community - from Wellesbourne, to Stretton-on-Dunsmore, to Southam and south to Tysoe, as well my home community of Kenilworth. What are people saying?

  1. People are fed up with politics and politicians. They feel taken for granted by a Government who many people voted for but few can now trust.
  2. People are struggling to get by on a daily basis with the high cost of food, bills and housing.
  3. Most importantly, people are proud of their communities, their connections, the things they love about their villages and towns, supporting each other, their children, their grandchildren, and the action they are taking to look after the environment and stay hopeful. We need to cherish and protect this.

We all want someone who will stand up for our communities, bring integrity back into our broken politics and take strong action on the climate crisis that we and future generations need.

So that is why I am stepping up. It’s time for me to stand up and be counted for our community. I will be your strong Green voice for Kenilworth & Southam. Together we can make a difference!”
